Office lockouts tend to happen at the worst moments: early before a meeting, late after everyone else has left. Here's what usually causes them and how to get back in.
Common causes
- Lost or misplaced keys
- A lock that has worn out or jammed
- A key broken off in the cylinder
- A forgotten code or failed access fob
Why DIY isn't ideal
Office doors frequently use commercial-grade locks and closers. Forcing them risks damaging hardware you will then have to replace, and may set off an alarm.
What to expect
Call with the address, the type of door and lock, and who is authorized to approve the work. The locksmith will confirm the price, verify authorization on site, open the door and check the lock still secures properly.
After you are back in
If keys are missing, rekey the affected locks. If the lock failed, repair or replace it. If codes or fobs are the issue, update the access list.
Prevention
A master key system, a documented key register and a spare key held off-site make future lockouts much easier to handle.
