Search for a locksmith and every ad claims to be the top choice in town. Those words cost nothing. Here is what to look for instead.
Why the superlatives don't help
Anyone can call themselves the top locksmith. What you actually want to know is whether they will turn up, explain the price, do the job properly and treat your property with care. Those things show in how a company behaves, not in its slogans.
Signs of a professional
- Answers the phone with a business name, not just “locksmith”
- Asks questions before quoting and gives a price before work starts
- Gives an honest arrival estimate
- Arrives identifiable and asks for proof of ownership or residence
- Explains options instead of pushing upgrades
Licensing and insurance in California
California licenses locksmith companies and individual locksmiths through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Ask for the company's licence number and check it on the state's licence lookup. Ask about liability insurance too.
Red flags
- No physical location or a generic business name
- A very low phone price that grows on arrival
- Refusing to quote before starting
- Unmarked vehicle and no identification
- Going straight to drilling a standard lock
Reputation you can check
Read recent reviews across more than one platform, and ask neighbors who they use. Local word of mouth is still one of the most reliable signals.
